Origin and history

The Saint-Nizier church, located in Place Saint-Nizier in the 2nd arrondissement of Lyon, is a major religious monument of the city. Dedicated to Nizier, bishop of Lyon in the 6th century, it is attested from the High Middle Ages. Its importance grew with the political and economic boom of Lyon after the year, creating tensions with St John's Cathedral. The present building, rebuilt in the 14th and 15th centuries in flamboyant Gothic style, replaces an older basilica whose origins may date back to a Roman temple dedicated to Attis or an ancient cemetery.

The Gothic reconstruction spread from the 14th to the 15th century, with interruptions due to the plague of 1348 and the conflicts of the Hundred Years War. The north bell tower, completed in 1481, houses a medieval clock still in operation. The church becomes a symbol of the Lyon bourgeoisie, opposed to the clerical elites of Saint John. Its architecture, marked by bold vaults and a composite facade (gothic, Renaissance and neogothic), reflects this rivalry. The crypt, dating from the fifth century, preserves 19th-century mosaics evoking the martyrs of Lyon.

In the 16th century, Saint-Nizier was looted by the Huguenots, then restored. It houses notable works of art, such as a statue of Coysevox and stained glass windows by Lucien Bégule. Ranked a historic monument in 1840, it suffered degradation during the Revolution, even as a deposit of flour. In the 19th century, neogothic restorations completed the facade and added the southern bell tower. The church remains an active place of worship, marked by events such as the occupation by prostitutes in 1975.

The interior is distinguished by its slender vaults, marble master altar and 19th century stalls. The Merklin organ (1885), innovative for its electro-pneumatic system, is today unusable. Among the church-related figures were Pauline Jaricot, beatified in 2022, and Frédéric Ozanam, founder of the Saint Vincent de Paul Conferences. The crypt, accessible from the nave, preserves mosaics representing the Christian origins of Lyon.

Saint-Nizier also embodies the Lyon social tensions, as in 1791, when the refractory priest Jacques Linsolas was arrested there after a controversial preaching. In the 20th century, it became a symbol of resistance, as during the 1975 occupation by prostitutes denouncing police violence. Today, it remains a place of worship and heritage, animated by the Emmanuel Community since 1996.
