The choir, apse and side chapels: inscription by decree of 1 March 1926
Origin and history
The church Saint-Serge and Saint-Bach de Pourrain is a religious building located in the commune of Pourrain, in the department of Yonne, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built during the second quarter of the 16th century, it represents an example of Christian architecture of this period, marked by both Gothic and Renaissance influences. Its partial inscription in title of historical monuments in 1926 specifically concerns the choir, apse and side chapels, highlighting their heritage and architectural value.
In the 16th century, parish churches like Saint-Serge played a central role in the life of Burgundy rural communities. They served not only as a place of worship, but also as a framework for social gatherings, collective decisions and local celebrations. The region, then in transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, saw its landscape marked by these buildings, often enriched by gifts from local lords or brotherhoods.
The building is now owned by the commune of Pourrain. Although the available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) do not specify its current state of openness to the public, its listing as historical monuments guarantees its preservation. The protected elements, dated from 1926, testify to an early desire to safeguard this heritage, in a context where Burgundy-Franche-Comté has numerous religious buildings classified or registered.
