Origin and history
The Écomusée du Grand-Orly Seine Bièvre, located in Fresnes, is dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the tangible and intangible heritage of the inhabitants of the southern suburbs of Paris, from yesterday to today. Since 2003, its collection policy has focused on four main areas: communication (media, transport), transmission (inheritances, memorials), social life (associations, public or private interventions) and architecture (habitat, urban planning, green spaces). Each object, whether it be a solex, a Liberation scarf or lavender tools, is systematically associated with a recorded interview with its user or relatives, enriched with fixed or animated images.
The collections, composed of about 2,000 various objects, reflect the diversity of lifestyles and trades in Val-de-Bièvre and neighbouring municipalities. They include old or contemporary heritage, in use or abandoned, as well as sound archives, photographs and documents related to local rural and artisanal history, such as those of the Cottinville Farm. The ecomuseum organises one to two exhibitions annually exploring social or cultural themes (work, immigration, leisure, urbanization), often in connection with local populations.
The institution emphasizes collective memory and social practices by crossing objects, oral narratives and images. The collections come mainly from the seven municipalities of Val-de-Bièvre, but also from the suburbs of Paris, with particular attention to the popular contexts or representative of national diversity. The ecomuseum also has a photographic fund dedicated to local creators and exposed themes, strengthening its territorial anchor and its role as cultural mediator.
Labeled Museum of France, the ecomuseum is housed in a former seigneurial farm, the farm of Cottinville, whose rural and artisanal history is itself integrated into the collections. Its official address, 41 rue Maurice Tenine in Fresnes, makes it a central place for the preservation of the material and intangible heritages of the southern suburbs, while offering a space for reflection on the social and urban evolutions of the territory.
