Jean-Marie Vianney - Curé d'Ars (saint)
Occupied the presbytery 41 years old.
Origin and history
The parish priest's presbytery was the home of the parish priest, directly associated with the basilica of Ars. This building, located in Ars-sur-Formans in the department of Ain, was occupied for forty-one years by Saint Jean-Marie Vianney, a major figure of local Catholicism. Today, it is transformed into a museum, allowing the discovery of personal objects, furniture and effects belonging to the saint, offering a tangible testimony of his daily life and ministry.
The former presbytery enjoys partial heritage protection: its facades and roofs have been listed as historic monuments since 3 February 1966. In addition, the site won the Maison des Illustres label in 2012, highlighting its importance in the religious and cultural history of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The museum thus preserves the memory of Jean-Marie Vianney, while illustrating the role of presbyteries in the parish life of the 19th century.
The building is part of a larger architectural and spiritual complex, centred around the basilica of Ars, a place of pilgrimage dedicated to Saint John Mary Vianney. Its preservation and presentation reflect the local attachment to this heritage, both material and intangible, linked to an emblematic figure of the French rural clergy.
