Saint-Michel Catholic Church (cad. 4,471): classification by decree of 31 October 1991
Origin and history
The Saint-Michel d'Ungersheim church, located in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region, is an emblematic monument dating back to the second half of the 11th century. Its Romanesque bell tower, dated the 12th century, constitutes one of the rare remains of this primitive period. Contrary to common usage, this bell tower is neither a bell tower nor a loud tower, but a distinct element backed by the southern wall of the nave. This architectural detail reflects the local constructive peculiarities and the successive adaptations suffered by the building over the centuries.
The current nave and choir were completely rebuilt in 1749, marking a major transformation in the history of the building. This reconstruction is in the context of the frequent baroque renovations in Alsace in the 18th century, when many medieval churches were modernized. The peak of the bell tower, of octagonal plan and surmounted by a characteristic bulb, was also reshaped at that time, illustrating the influence of central European architectural styles in the region. The ensemble, classified as Historical Monument since 1991, thus reflects almost seven centuries of architectural and religious evolution.
Located at the intersection of the Rue de l'École and Rue de l'Église, this Catholic church plays a central role in the local heritage. Its classification by decree of 31 October 1991 underlines its historical and artistic importance, while guaranteeing its preservation for future generations. The property of the municipality also ensures its anchoring in the collective life of Ungersheim, a village marked by a rich and turbulent Alsatian history, between French and Germanic influences.
