Ossuary (former) (Box ZB 111): entry by order of 23 November 1987
Origin and history
The ossuary of Conflans-en-Jarnisy, located in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle in the Grand Est region, dates from the 16th century. This funerary monument, typical of the religious practices of the time, was used to accommodate the exhumed bones of overcrowded cemeteries. Its architecture reflects local traditions related to burial management and collective memory, in a context where churches and their surroundings played a central role in community life.
Ranked as a Historic Monument, the ossuary was restored in 1887 due to its state of advanced degradation, threatening its stability. This intervention, mentioned in the archives, highlights the importance attached to the preservation of the Morrain funerary heritage. The building, now owned by the municipality, is protected by a registration order dated 23 November 1987, guaranteeing its conservation for future generations.
Available data from the Merimée database and Monumentum indicate its approximate location at 39 Rue des Jardiniers. Although its access to the public is not explicitly documented, its status as a registered monument and its historical value make it a remarkable witness to the funeral and architectural practices of the sixteenth century in Lorraine.
