Origin and history

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Healing is a Christian religious building located in Caen, in the eponymous district. Built between 1955 and 1961, it replaces temporary barracks erected after World War II. Its architecture, marked by an hourglass plan and a clean design, makes it a notable example of modern religious architecture of the twentieth century.

The project was born in 1951, when the so-called place of Healing was attached to Caen. The bishop of Bayeux then decided to erect a church there to serve the new large urban complex under construction. The realization is entrusted to the architects Guy Pison (conceptor) and Louis Reme (assistant), and financed in part by the war damage allocated to the chapel Sainte-Paix. The building was inaugurated in 1961.

Recognized for its originality, the church is labeled "Twentieth Century Heritage" by the Ministry of Culture. It is officially included in the supplementary inventory of historical monuments on 4 July 2005, highlighting its heritage importance in the religious and architectural landscape of Reconstruction.

Located on Rue Jean-Gutenberg, it is part of the Guérinière district, a symbol of post-war reconstruction in Caen. Its history reflects the urban and spiritual issues of the time, where architectural modernity met the needs of a changing population.
