Origin and history

The Musée de la Vannerie de Cadenet is a departmental establishment located in the village of Cadenet, in Vaucluse, in the heart of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It is entirely dedicated to basketry, a historical and emblematic economic activity of this town, nestled south of the Luberon massif. The museum occupies the premises of an old basketry called La Glause, thus testifying to the local artisanal heritage.

Founded in 1998, the museum was built thanks to the mobilization of the inhabitants of Cadenet. Two thirds of its collections come from donations from individuals, often objects transmitted from generation to generation. This community involvement underscores the cadenetians' commitment to their artisanal heritage and the preservation of this know-how.

The museum's collections cover a wide range of objects and media related to basketry. There are more than 1,000 vannières, workshop tools, raw material samples, and a media library rich in audio and video recordings. A library and practical workshops complement the offer, allowing visitors to actively discover traditional techniques. The aim is to present both local methods and the uses of basketry throughout history and world cultures.
