Origin and history

La Croix de l'Etang de Caro is a road cross located on the edge of the D166, south of the village of Caro, in Morbihan. It dates from the 16th century and is distinguished by its trilobed shape and its material in purple shale. The cross, originally located near the former Patouillet mill, disappeared for several decades before being raised near the presbytery. It has been listed as historical monuments since 13 May 1937.

On the architectural plane, the cross is monolithic and slightly patted, with rounded ends. It features an engraved decoration: a Greek cross and holes symbolizing Christ's five wounds on one side, and a blessed figure, probably an ecclesiastical, on the other side. This character, coarsely engraved, could represent Saint Yves, in the direction of the chapel dedicated to him.

The cross was raised on a masonry base, and its barrel seems to have been truncated. According to the sources, it was moved to the village near the presbytery. Its current location, although different from its original location, remains close to its historical and religious context.
