Origin and history
La Croix du Cemetery de Grand-Champ is a monumental cross located in the cemetery of the commune of Grand-Champ, Morbihan department, Brittany. Dating from the 16th century, it is distinguished by its monolithic granite barrel, erected on a base of the same material. The cross, about four metres high, has a shelled barrel on its four corners in its upper part. At its base, under a mitre pediment, there are four sculptures representing a bishop with a manipulator, a character holding a book and a palm, Saint Catherine with his wheel, as well as an unidentified fourth character. At the top, the cross itself is pierced in its centre of a diamond shape and has three equal flowered arms.
The Cross of the Grand-Champ Cemetery was inscribed as historical monuments by order of 23 May 1927. This classification reflects its heritage and artistic value, especially for its carved elements and its characteristic style of Breton Christian Renaissance architecture. The cross is located in the centre of the cemetery, highlighting its symbolic and commemorative role within the local community. It is now owned by the commune of Grand-Champ, Morbihan.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, specify that the location of the cross is indicated with average accuracy (level 5 of 10), and that its exact address corresponds to the cemetery located 32 Rue du Général de Gaulle in Grand-Champ. No additional information is provided on its current use, such as possible opening to visit or related activities. The cross remains a typical example of the Breton cemetery crosses, often associated with religious representations and a memorial function for the deceased.
