The monumental gate (including avantaux): inscription by decree of 28 December 1926

Origin and history

The Tarascon Palace of Justice is a building built in the first half of the seventeenth century. This monument, located in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, is representative of the judicial architecture of this period in Provence. Although little detailed information is available on its construction, its status as a Historic Monument reflects its local heritage importance.

The monumental gate of the Palace of Justice, including its vantals, was inscribed under the title of Historic Monuments by a decree of 28 December 1926. This partial classification underlines the architectural value of this specific element. The building now belongs to the department and remains a symbol of the judicial authority in the region.

At the time of its construction, Tarascon was a dynamic city of Provence, marked by a social organization structured around judicial and administrative institutions. The courthouses of that period played a central role in regulating conflicts and enforcing local laws, reflecting the growing authority of the royal state in the region.
