Origin and history

The city hall of Alet-les-Bains probably occupies the same location since at least the sixteenth century. Its architecture consists of two arches in the middle of the square side and one arch for each side street, decorated with mouldings (net, doucin, listel). These elements suggest a structure designed to house public activities, although the space is not vaulted but simply ceilinged with exposed beams, without decor.

The date of 1683, carved in a rectangular square-side cartridge, probably marks the completion of restoration work carried out in the seventeenth century. The windows on the first floor, subsequently redesigned, bear witness to later architectural developments. The building, now communal property, includes protected elements since 1948, such as the entire adjacent convent, inscribed in the Historical Monuments.

Located at 4 rue de l'Ancienne Mairie, the city hall embodies the central role of municipal institutions in the social organization of Alet-les-Bains, a municipality of the historical Languedoc (now Occitanie). Its location, covered and open on the square, reflects a desire for assembly and collective management, typical of medieval and modern villages. The Creative Commons license of the available photos highlights its anchoring in the shared local heritage.
