Origin and history

Vascoeuil Castle, also known as Forestière Castle, is a historic residence in the commune of Vascoeuil, in the department of Eure in Normandy. This monument, partly inscribed with historical monuments, is an example of medieval and Renaissance architecture, with elements dating from the 14th, 16th and 12th centuries, including an iconic octagonal tower. The estate covers three hectares and includes a house, a dovecote, a farm and a French-style park.

The seigneury of Vascoeil, dependent on that of Saint-Denis-le-Thiboult, was mentioned in 1080 under the possession of Gilbert de Vascoeil. The estate, originally linked to the duchy of Longueville, was attached to the crown of France in 1694 after the death without heir of the last Duke. Between 1080 and 1505 he belonged to the Hague family, before being sold to the Rouenese merchant Guillaume Le Gras. This castle is also famous for having welcomed historian Jules Michelet, who wrote some of his major works there between 1843 and 1860, in a tower transformed into a work firm.

The castle now houses a regional centre of art and culture, founded in 1970 by Maître François Papillard. It offers contemporary art exhibitions and a museum dedicated to Jules Michelet, where his work firm has been reconstituted. The castle park permanently exhibits works by renowned artists such as Braque, Dalí, Vasarely or Volti. In 2025, part of the collections will be auctioned by Artcurial, including works by Pierre Székely and Volti.

The estate has been protected in several ways: the facades and roofs of the house and dovecote have been listed as historical monuments since 1985 and 1991, while the natural site has been classified since 1944 and registered since 1942. These protections highlight the heritage and cultural importance of this place, which combines medieval history, literary heritage and contemporary art.

Future

Vascoeuil Castle houses a regional centre for art and culture, which has regularly organized exhibitions since 1970
