Origin and history
Château Sainte-Marguerite is an emblematic bastide located in the commune of Pierrevert, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department. Built in the middle of the 16th century, this house illustrates the typical architecture of Provencal bastides, combining agricultural functionality and residential elegance. Its designation as historic monuments in 2005 reflects its heritage value and the desire to preserve this local heritage.
Pierrevert, like other villages in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, experienced in the 16th century a period of economic and social development marked by agriculture, including the cultivation of vines and olive trees. The bastides, often built by wealthy families, served both as residences and farm centres. These buildings reflect the social organization of the time, where the land property was a symbol of status and power.
The Château Sainte-Marguerite, although little documented in the available sources, is part of this broader historical context. Its recent inscription (2005) among the historical monuments of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence underlines its importance in the regional architectural landscape. The bastids of this period were often designed to withstand the political and religious tensions of the time, while providing a comfortable living environment for their occupants.
