Origin and history
The Jeanne d'Arc Museum was founded in July 1952 by Léon Scheydecker, based on collections gathered by local notables. Located in a wing of the city hall of Vaucouleurs, it highlights the key role of this Lorrain city in the history of Jeanne d'Arc. The initial funds, enriched with donations, bequests and departmental deposits, cover stone objects, prints, bronzes and posters, illustrating the many facets of johannic imagery: young girl, warrior or martyrdom.
The museum underwent two major phases of transformation: a renovation in 1973, followed by a restructuring in 1982. His collections, comprising nearly 300 pieces (drawings, models, stained glass, bronzes), explore the literary, religious and political representations of Jeanne d'Arc, from the 16th century to the contemporary era. Among the assets are series of bronzes and posters of theatre or cinema, offering both a historical and a mythological approach.
Labelled Museum of France, it relies on various sources, including deposits from the department of Meuse. Its official address, 44 Rue Jeanne d'Arc in Vaucouleurs, and its website (museums-meuse.fr) make it a central place to understand the legacy of Jeanne d'Arc in Lorraine. However, the accuracy of its location is considered poor (note 5/10), according to available data.
