Origin and history

The stone cross of Castelnaudary is a historical monument located in the cemetery of the commune, in the department of Aude in Occitanie region. Dating from the 16th century, this sandstone cross presents a rich iconography, with sculpted representations on both sides. On one of them, a Crucifixion is framed by the Virgin and Saint John, while the other side shows a Virgin with Child under a dais supported by angels, surrounded by Saints Catherine and Barbe. The original drum disappeared, leaving only the upper part, mounted on a modern dice.

Classified as historical monuments by order of 27 December 1913, this cross bears witness to the religious art of the Renaissance in southern France. Its location in the cemetery underscores its initial role, probably related to funeral devotion or the protection of sacred places. The sculptural details, such as the statues of saints at the top, reflect the symbolic and artistic importance of this type of monument in the local communities of the time.

The property of the cross belongs to the commune of Castelnaudary. Although its present state no longer makes it possible to appreciate the whole of its original structure, the preserved elements offer a valuable overview of 16th century artistic and religious practices in Languedoc. Available sources, such as the Merimée or Monumentum base, confirm its ranking and precise location, while highlighting its heritage interest in the history of Aude.
