Origin and history

La Croix du Born is a monumental cross located north of the village of Born, in the department of Lozère, in the Occitanie region. Dating from the second quarter of the 18th century, more precisely from 1739, it has been listed as historical monuments since 1926. Its drum, formed by a swelled column in its middle, ends with a torus at each end. On the upper torus rests the cross, carved from a Crucifixion on one side and from a Virgin of mercy on the other.

This type of cross, common in French countryside, often served as a religious landmark or symbol for local communities. In the 18th century, the Lozère, then integrated into Languedoc, was marked by a rural economy and a strong presence of the Catholic Church in daily life. The road or village crosses, such as that of the Born, played a role both spiritual and social, marking the boundaries of parishes or commemorating local events.

The Born Cross is now owned by the municipality and is part of the protected architectural heritage of the Lozère. Its inscription in 1926 bears witness to its historical and artistic value, although its exact location is considered to be of poor accuracy (level 5/10). It is listed in the Mérimée database under the code Insee 48029, corresponding to the commune of Born.
