Origin and history
The municipal museum of Semur-en-Auxois was founded in 1834 together with a school of drawing and sculpture. His first collection of works was the painter Étienne Bouhot (1780-1862), to which were added ancient, medieval and modern objects collected by the Société des sciences historiques et naturelles de Semur-en-Auxois. These collections reflect an early interest in preserving local heritage, combining art, history and science.
The museum is distinguished by its galleries dedicated to paleontology and geology, with more than 12,000 samples of minerals and fossils from the region, including ammonites and fish prints. The zoology room presents the local fauna (mussels, birds, mammals), while the archaeological sections cover the Paleolithic, Neolithic and Gallo-Roman period, illustrated by the excavations of the villa of Bierre-les-Semur. Ex-votos and sculptures from the 13th to 14th centuries, as well as a rich set of 19th century paintings, complete this cultural panorama.
Located in a former 17th century convent, the museum benefits from the label Musée de France. Its eclectic collections, ranging from natural sciences to fine arts, make it a reference point for understanding the history and territory of Semur-en-Auxois. The official address, 3 rue Jean-Jacques Collenot, places the museum in the heart of the city, in the department of the Côte-d.
