Origin and history
The church Saint-Germain-d'Auxerre, located in Savigny-le-Temple in Seine-et-Marne, is a medieval religious building. His Romanesque nave, the oldest part, dates from the Romanesque period and is distinguished by his absence of foothills. The church was enlarged during the Gothic period with the addition of the choir, a side chapel and a bell tower, all with foothills. These elements, higher than the nave, communicate with each other through broken arched bays. The western façade of the bell tower also features a broken arched bay, a vestige of an unfinished north-bottom project.
A place of worship existed before 1149, the date of Savigny-le-Temple's donation to the Templars. The Romanesque nave, modest and without foothills, contrasts with the Gothic additions of the 15th century, including the wooden frame (except for the chapel, stone). The bell tower arrow was added in the 19th century. The church was included in the additional inventory of historical monuments by decree of 14 April 1926, and restorations took place in 1993, revealing skeletons dated between the 12th and 15th centuries.
The stained glass of the choir, dating from the 19th century, represents a crucifixion of Christ as well as the martyrs of St Stephen and St Sebastian. In 1943, the high altar of the Virgin's chapel and its tabernacle were offered to the church. More recently, a porch and sacristy have been added. The 1993 excavations revealed burials, some of which belonged to local notables of past centuries.
The church, owned by the commune, illustrates the architectural evolution between Romanesque and Gothic styles. Its history is marked by successive transformations, reflecting Savigny-le-Temple's spiritual and community needs throughout the centuries. The archaeological discoveries of 1993 enriched the knowledge of his past, thanks in particular to the skeletons exhumed in the chapel.
