Origin and history

The former chapter of the Chanoinesses de Maubeuge is an emblematic religious building of the city, inscribed in historical monuments since 1941. Located in the heart of Maubeuge, 2-14 rue du Chapître, it bears witness to an architectural and spiritual heritage linked to local history. This building, initially a monastery, was founded in the seventh century by Saint Aldegonde, a major figure in the Christianization of the region and founder of the city.

The Chapter of the Chanoinesses has had several vocations over the centuries. Closed during the French Revolution, it was then reused as a clinic and then as a museum from 1980. Today, it houses Notre-Dame de Grace High School, illustrating a modern adaptation of a place full of history. Its designation as historic monuments in 1941 underscores its heritage importance.

Historical sources, such as the works of Laurence Baudoux-Rousseau or the archives of the Revue du Nord, highlight its central role in Maubeuge's religious and social life. The building, with its protected elements (cadastre 599 to 610), remains a symbol of the transition between medieval heritage and contemporary uses.
