Manufacture and drying of the eighteenth century: inscription by decree of 24 January 1947
Origin and history
The Chapaize tilery is an industrial building located in the commune of Chapaize, in the department of Saône-et-Loire, in the region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. From the 4th quarter of the 18th century, it illustrates the rise of artisanal activities related to terracotta in this rural area, where clay resources were abundant. Its architecture, typical of the utility buildings of the time, includes hangars dedicated to the manufacture and drying of products.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 24 February 1947, this tilery bears witness to the early industrial heritage of Burgundy. The protected elements specifically include 18th century manufacturing and drying hangars, highlighting their historical and technical value. Although the sources do not specify its current use, its listing reflects the importance attached to the preservation of traditional handicraft sites.
The location of the tilery, at 5 Chemin des Verchères, confirms its anchoring in a territory marked by a rural and artisanal economy. At the time of its construction, tiles played a key role in the supply of materials for local homes and public buildings, thus contributing to the development of Burgundy villages. Their gradual decline, with industrialization, has made these vestiges all the more valuable to understand the techniques and lifestyles of the past.
