Origin and history
The chapel Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Rocamadour is a historical monument located in the commune of Rocamadour, in the Lot department. This place of worship, integrated into the emblematic religious city, underwent a major reconstruction in the nineteenth century due to its state of advanced degradation.
In 1864, faced with the threat of « ruin on all sides », it was decided to reconstruct the chapel entirely according to a different plan, established by architect Jean-Baptiste Chevalt. The objective was also to clear the entrance to the nearby Saint-Blaise Chapel. The work, although not accurately dated in the sources, appears to have been carried out between 1869 and 1870, marking a significant transformation of the building.
The chapel is part of a wider religious group, classified as Historical Monuments under the reference "City of Religion" (PA46000020). Its location, at 5441 Rue de la Coronerie, makes it a central element of the architectural and spiritual heritage of Rocamadour, attracting visitors and pilgrims for centuries.
