Tour du Bourg and the adjoining court (cad. AT 196, 197): by order of 28 June 1972

Origin and history

The Tour du Bourg de Saumur is an emblematic monument of the city of Saumur, built between the 14th and 15th centuries. This medieval vestige, located at 9-11 rue du Prêche, is one of the protected elements of the commune, also including the adjoining courtine. Ranked a Historical Monument by decree of 28 June 1972, this tower illustrates the strategic importance of Saumur during the Middle Ages, a period marked by regional conflicts and the need to strengthen cities.

At that time, Saumur, located in the present Loire region, was a strategic crossroads between Anjou, Touraine and Poitou. Fortifications, such as the Tour du Bourg, played a key role in defending local populations and controlling trade routes. These structures also reflect the medieval social organization, where local lords and religious institutions (as the name of the rue du Prêche indicates) had a major influence on urban planning and daily life. The tower, now owned by the municipality, bears witness to this preserved architectural and historical heritage.

Depending on available sources, including Monumentum, the tower's location is estimated with fair accuracy (note 5/10), and its exact address is listed in the Merimée database. Although its current use (visit, rental, etc.) is not specified, its classification in 1972 underscores its heritage value. GPS coordinates and Street View views make it possible to appreciate the location in the current urban fabric, between medieval memory and modernity.
