Origin and history
Thomas' house, located in Saint-Pierre-d'Oléron, is a monument built in the 4th quarter of the 16th century. It is distinguished by an inn sign embedded in its façade, dating from 1585, representing a nave and two inscriptions: "Céans a bon vin et logis" and "JHS RLE. OV. BLD 1585". This suggests that an inn once occupied the site of the current building.
The building was registered as historical monuments by order of 13 February 1928, specifically for its carved sign. This protection highlights its heritage interest, linked to local history and modern business practices. The engraved stone bears witness to the activities of welcoming and trading on the island of Oléron, then maritime and terrestrial crossroads.
The exact location of the house is 55 Rue de la République, in the center of Saint-Pierre-d'Oléron. Although sources mention a "passible" location accuracy (note 5/10), its address is clearly referenced in the Merimée database. The building does not seem open to visit, but its sign remains a remarkable vestige of Renaissance civil architecture in Charente-Maritime.
