Dolmenic Chamber and Menhir (Cd. G 495): Order of 10 July 1933
Origin and history
The Dolmenic and Menhir Chamber of Carnac is an emblematic vestige of Neolithic, a period marked by the emergence of the first megalithic buildings in Europe. This monument, located in the municipality of Carnac (Morbihan), bears witness to the funeral and ritual practices of the prehistoric societies of the region. Its classification as Historic Monument by decree of 10 July 1933 underlines its heritage and archaeological importance.
Megaliths, such as this dolmenic chamber and its associated menhir, were often linked to symbolic or religious functions. In the Neolithic era, Brittany was a densely occupied region where sedentary communities developed agriculture, livestock and organized social structures. These monuments probably served as places of worship, collective burials or territorial landmarks, reflecting a complex community organization.
The location of the site, specified as Kerguearec (56340 Carnac), is indicated with average reliability (note 5/10 for accuracy). Available data are mainly from the Merimée database and Monumentum, confirming its protected status and administrative address in the Morbihan department in Brittany.
