Origin and history

The dolmen of Keryargon, located in the municipality of Belz in Morbihan, is an emblematic vestige of Neolithic in Brittany. This megalithic monument, composed of a funeral chamber covered with a tumulus, illustrates the architectural techniques and beliefs of local prehistoric societies. Its inscription under the title of Historical Monuments by order of 24 July 2023 underlines its heritage and archaeological importance.

The location of the dolmen, at approximately 39 Route de Ninezur, is documented in the Merimée database under the code Insee 56013, attached to the Morbihan department and the Brittany region. Although available sources (Monumentum, internal data) do not specify its exact use or sponsor, its state of conservation and legal protection make it a key site for understanding neolithic funeral practices in Armoric.

In the Neolithic era, dolmens generally served as collective burials, reflecting a social organization structured around funeral rites and a territory marked by these monuments. The Breton region, rich in megaliths, bears witness to a dense human occupation and shared technical know-how, such as extraction and the transport of massive stones. The Keryargon dolmen is part of this cultural landscape, although its local specificities (size, orientation, funeral furniture) are not detailed in the current sources.
