Origin and history

The porch of the Antonins is a monumental gate located in the municipality of Laives, in Saône-et-Loire, region Burgundy-Franche-Comté. This monument owes its name to the statue of Saint Anthony, placed in a niche of the structure. This statue is the only remaining element of a missing chapel, built in the 15th century by the order of the Antonins, a religious hospital and monastic order active during the Middle Ages.

The porch was listed as historic monuments on May 8, 1928, recognizing its heritage value. The door, with its carved niche and statue, is located precisely in the hamlet of Lenoux, at the address 1 Impasse des Antonins. Its official inscription mentions these elements as protected, emphasizing their historical and artistic importance.

The Antonine Order, founded in the 11th century, was dedicated to the care of the sick, especially those suffering from the "evil of the ardent" (ergotism). Their presence in the region bears witness to their social and religious role in medieval times. The original chapel, of which only the statue remains, illustrates the local anchor of this order and its architectural heritage.

Today, the Antonine porch remains a material testimony of this past, accessible to the public although practical information on visits is limited. Its state of conservation and location, noted as "passable" (level 5/10), make it a site to discover for lovers of medieval Burgundy heritage.
