Origin and history

The Notre-Dame-des-Vertus chapel, located in Nampty in the department of the Somme, has its origins in the Middle Ages, with a first written mention dating from 1175. The current building, built in the 16th century, preserves an 18th century bell tower. This place of worship acquired a special reputation in the 19th century thanks to the development of Marian worship, then taking the name of Notre-Dame des Vertus. Its architecture mixes brick and stone, with an arrowed slate bell tower, while its interior houses a statue of the Virgin with the Child and many ex-votos.

Backed by the chapel, a memorial park was built in the 20th century, including a Remembrance Calvary 1914-1918 erected in 1934 and a Pietà (status of the Virgin-aux-Sept-Douleurs) dated 1922. These elements, as well as the chapel, were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 12 December 2023. A local association, "Faith and Pilgrimage", founded in 1986, supervised the exterior renovation between 2005 and 2010 and now ensures its preservation.

The site, located at 2 Route de Beauvais, combines religious heritage and historical memory. The chapel, a communal property, and the park, partly private, illustrate the evolution of devotional and commemorative practices in Picardia. Their recent protection underscores their heritage value, both architectural and historical, linked to both the Marian faith and the First World War.
