Origin and history

The house at 3, rue de la Croix in Obernai is a historic monument listed since 1931. This building, dating from the 16th or 17th centuries, is distinguished by its entirely stone construction, a material not very common for the dwellings of this period in the region. Despite its inscription, its original architectural features, such as toothed gables and berries, have been altered by modern restorations, partly erasing its historic authenticity.

Obernai, located in Alsace in the Bas-Rhin department, was at this time a city marked by medieval and reborn architecture. The stone houses, often attached to the ramparts, reflected the prosperity of the bourgeois or local artisans. These houses served both as housing and as a workshop, playing a central role in the economic and social life of the city.

The preservation of these buildings makes it possible to testify, although partially, to this architectural and urban heritage characteristic of the pre-industrial Alsace.
