Origin and history

The house of 33 and 35 Rue Froide is a civilian building located in the old town centre of Caen, close to the Saint-Sauveur church. Dating from the early 16th century, it illustrates the architectural transition between Gothic and Renaissance. Its facade and roof, inscribed in the Historic Monuments since 1927, bear witness to this stylistic duality.

The left skylight, adorned with hooks and fantastic animals, is a late Gothic style, while the one on the right, with its pilasters and candelabras, already announces the Renaissance. This mix reflects the artistic evolutions of the time, where local artisans gradually integrated Italian influences.

The building is representative of the Kenyan urban heritage, marked by the post-war reconstruction of Cent Ans and the economic development of Normandy in the 16th century. The houses of this period often served as houses for merchants or artisans, participating in the vitality of the city centre.
