Porte sur rue : inscription by decree of 25 September 1929

Origin and history

The house located on 2 rue du Sénéchal in Ussel is a 16th century civil building, typical of the Renaissance urban architecture in Limousin. Its most remarkable element, a street door, was inscribed under the title of Historical Monuments by ministerial decree of 25 September 1929. This protection reflects the heritage value of this architectural element, although other parts of the building do not benefit from this distinction.

Ussel, located in the department of Corrèze (New Aquitaine region), was at that time a city marked by its role as a commercial hub between the Central Massif and the Aquitaine basin. Bourgeois houses like this reflected the prosperity of local merchants or notables, often built of granite stone, an abundant material in the region. Their narrow street layout, with sometimes decorated facades, illustrates the gradual urbanization of Limous cities during the modern period.

The precise location of this monument, although documented (GPS coordinates and exact address), is considered "passible" (note 5/10) in heritage databases. This impreciseness can be explained by later urban changes or historical geolocation errors. No information is available on its access to the public, its current vocation (housing, commerce, etc.), or on any protected interior developments.
