Fayré lime ovens (old) (see E 38, 40, 41): entry by order of 6 November 1980
Origin and history
The Payré lime ovens, located in the commune of Foussais-Payré in Vendée, constitute an emblematic industrial vestige of the 19th century. These facilities, dedicated to the production of lime, were essential for the agricultural and construction activities of the time. Their architecture and operation reflect the craft techniques and local economic needs during this period of industrial transformation in France.
The site was recognized for its heritage value, as evidenced by its listing in the Inventory of Historic Monuments by order of November 6, 1980. This protection specifically covers old lime kilns identified under cadastral plots E 38, 40 and 41. Although their exact location is approximate (noted 5/10 precisely), their presence remains an important historical marker for the Pays de la Loire region.
In the 19th century, lime kilns played a key role in rural areas, providing essential material for soil modification, construction and handicrafts. Their establishment in Foussais-Payré is part of a regional context where agriculture and small local industries structured economic and social life. These infrastructures, often collective, also illustrated community dynamics and know-how transmitted from generation to generation.
