Origin and history
The Gauzy hotel is a private hotel located in Castelnaudary, in the department of Aude, in Occitanie region. Built between the second half of the 18th century and the 19th century, it illustrates the civil architecture of this period, marked by urban transformations and redevelopments of public spaces. The building is distinguished by its 19th century façade, which includes classical elements such as rhythmic spans and niches.
Originally, part of the building, located at the corner, belonged to the town of Castelnaudary and served as a mazel (meat market) from the 14th century, as evidenced by archives dated 1396, 1415 and 1503. This angle was then transformed into a public fountain before being incorporated into the hotel in the 19th century, during renovation work. The interior courtyard houses a large west staircase, whose wrought iron ramp, adorned with the coat of arms of the Marquis de Gauzy and the Malespina-Alos, is a remarkable example of the 18th century craftsmanship.
The staircase ramp, classified as a Historical Monument by order of April 10, 1948, consists of three straight flights with various motifs. The panels on the first and third flights have complex floral and geometric decors, while those on the second flight and the gallery have a more refined style, centered on a vertical flower. The Gauzy family shield, integrated into the gallery, highlights the link between this hotel and the local aristocracy. A support grid, similar to the pattern of the ramps, remains on a window of the interior façade.
The Gauzy hotel thus reflects the architectural and social evolution of Castelnaudary, where public and private spaces have gradually merged. Its classification reflects the heritage value of its interior elements, including the stairwell and its wrought iron decoration, characteristic of the noble houses of the modern era.
