Origin and history
The halls of Auxonne constitute a major public building of the city, built in the 17th century. This type of building, typical of the merchant towns of the time, served as a central place for trade, markets and community gatherings. Their architecture reflects the practical and symbolic needs of a society organised around trade and crafts.
Classified Historic Monument by decree of 7 December 1925, these halls are today the property of the commune of Auxonne. Their location at 6 rue des Halles makes it a landmark in the city centre. Although their geographical precision is deemed "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), they remain an architectural and social testimony of Burgundy d'Ancien Régime, where the halls played a key role in the economic and social life of the towns.
