Origin and history

The Milestone of Pont-de-Labeaume is a 186 cm high cylindrical Roman vestige, dated between July 25, 306 and December 25, 312 thanks to its Latin inscription. It pays tribute to Flavius Valerius Constantin (Constantin), called "Pious, Most Noble Caesar" and presented as "son of the divine Constance Augustus, born for the common good". This type of monument traditionally marked the distances along the Roman ways, while serving as a propagandist support for imperial authority.

The terminal was discovered between 1857 and 1859 in a riparian field, near the former imperial road of Pont-de-Labeaume (Ardèche). After it was revealed, it was moved across the road and installed on a base in front of the parish church, near the town hall, on the public square. Its current location, sealed in the benches delimiting the square, reflects a desire for local heritage presentation.

Ranked under the title of historical monuments by order of 11 July 1932, the terminal now belongs to the commune. His Latin inscription was referenced in major epigraphic corpuses, such as the Corpus Inscription Latinarum (CIL XII and XVII), attesting to its importance for the study of old networks and imperial propaganda in Roman Gaul. No information is available on any recent restorations or archaeological studies.

The monument is part of a regional context marked by the Roman presence in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, where the Milestones marked the strategic axes. Pont-de-Labeaume, crossed by the river and situated on ancient routes of communication, illustrates this ancient heritage. The terminal today constitutes a rare material testimony of Roman infrastructures in Ardèche.
