Maison Amigues (cad. A 197): registration by order of 10 April 1948
Origin and history
La maison Amigues is a medieval house located in Belpech, in the Aude department, in the Occitanie region. Dating from the 16th century, it is distinguished by its wooden structure, typical of the civil architecture of this period. The upper two floors are in strong protruding, a rare and remarkable feature for this period.
The south facade, overlooking the Market Square, features columns carved posts with flamboyant heel bases. These decorative elements, although partially disappeared during subsequent renovations, bear witness to refined craftsmanship. At the corner of the facades, square poles remain, the outer edges of which are decorated with fine columns, while a woman's head carved in profile decorates a console.
The front door is framed by a double sling, topped by a small shield, highlighting the social importance of its former occupants. Enlisted for historical monuments in 1948, this house illustrates the evolution of urban habitat in Languedoc during the Renaissance. Its complex assemblage, with recessed frames and slit bushes, reveals advanced carpentry techniques for the time.
Today, the Amigues House remains a valuable testimony of Belpech's civil architectural heritage. Although some parts have been modified for later developments, its original structure and sculpted details make it an emblematic building of the region. Its inclusion in the inventory of historical monuments guarantees its preservation for future generations.
