Origin and history
The Malouinière de la Ville Azé, also known as Villazé, is a malouinière located in Saint-Coulomb, Ille-et-Vilaine (Bretagne). Dated from 1729, it illustrates the sober architecture of the small three-span malouinries, with two low wings housing latrines and a service room. The complex, slightly redesigned, includes a garden, an old courtyard transformed into a garden, and a well. Its living room retains a characteristic decor of these residences of shipowners or notable malouins of the eighteenth century.
The malouinière passed by alliance to René-Charles-Marie de Fournier, Count of Bellevue, who was mayor of Saint-Coulomb from 1802 to 1816. This type of residence reflects the prosperity of Saint-Malo's maritime activities at that time, although this malouinière is more modest than other regional examples such as the Puits-Sauvage in Saint-Servan or the Petit-Lévy in Paramé. It is listed as historical monuments by order of 9 November 2000, protecting its house, wings, garden, enclosure walls and well.
Architecturally, the Malouinière de la Ville Azé is distinguished by its simplicity and state of conservation. The protected elements include the whole house, both wings, as well as the exterior spaces (garden and well), showing a coherent and representative set of minor malouinries. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments underscores its heritage interest, both in its building and in its original landscaping.
