Origin and history
The commemorative column of the Montgolfier brothers is a monument erected in 1818 on the property of François-Antoine de Boissy d'Anglas, a politician and landowner. Located in Louveciennes, in the immediate vicinity of Bougival (Yvelines), this limestone and cut stone column peaks several meters high. Its narrow barrel is surmounted by a stylized representation of a balloon, paying tribute to the pioneers of the aerostation. Originally, it was in a park built by Boissy d'Anglas as early as 1800, which is now extinct.
The column is the last remaining element of the property of Boissy d'Anglas, whose home was demolished during the 19th century. The park, loti in the late 1960s, left room for a private residential complex. In 2010, the monument's state of advanced degradation required its fence for security reasons. Despite this, the column was recognized for its heritage value and listed as historic monuments on December 21, 1984.
Although technically located in the territory of Louveciennes, the column is often associated with Bougival because of its immediate proximity to this commune. Its official address, according to the Merimée base, is the 15 quai Boissy-d'Anglas in Bougival (Yvelines). The monument illustrates the early interest in the history of aeronautics, as well as the commemorative practices of the post-revolutionary elites in Île-de-France.
