Origin and history

The Assumption of La Ferté-Macé, located in the Orne in Normandy, is a major religious building built between 1851 and 1901. Designed by architect François Liger, it replaces an 11th century Romanesque chapel still visible nearby. The church, Romanesque-Byzantine style, is distinguished by its imposing dimensions: 70 meters long, 38 meters wide at the transept, and bell towers culminating at 60 meters. Its carillon of sixteen bells, melted by Bollée, and its facades in granite, limestone and brick, imitating a mosaic effect, make it a remarkable example of neo-Roman architecture.

The construction of the church spanned half a century, marked by key steps: the solemn consecration took place on August 5, 1860, although the bell towers were not completed until 1899, after an initial change of plan (a dome was originally planned). The bells were installed and blessed in 1907. The building, classified as a historical monument since 1978 for its Romanesque remains and inscribed entirely in 2006, houses a decorative programme centered on the chapel of the Virgin, with mosaics made by Facchina. Its Latin cross plan, its walk-through and its radiant chapels reflect a traditional bill revisited.

The church is part of an architectural and religious renewal of the 19th century, where Norman communities, such as La Ferté-Macé, show their prosperity through monumental buildings. The choice of local materials (granite, limestone) and the integration of Byzantine elements bear witness to a desire for prestige, while the carillon and bell towers emphasize its central role in community life. The adjacent Romanesque chapel, classified in 1978, recalls the medieval origins of the site, creating a dialogue between the epochs.

The architects and artisans who worked on it, such as François Liger (designer), Prempain (associate architect), Facchina (mosaist) and Lorin (painter-glassmaker), have left a lasting mark. The protection of the monument, extended in 2006 to the entire building, guarantees the preservation of this heritage, symbol of both faith and technical ingenuity for future generations.
