Origin and history
The church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assumption de La Boisse, located in the department of Ain, is attested from 984. Its ancient history is linked to the seigneury of Montluel from the 11th century, before passing under the dependence of the order of Saint-Ruf in 1080, which the neighboring priory still bears witness to today. This religious building, marked by successive restorations, embodies almost a millennium of Christian presence in the region.
The monument underwent major works in the 12th, 15th and 16th centuries, reflecting the architectural and spiritual evolutions of each era. A final restoration campaign, carried out between 1967 and 1995, preserved its heritage while adapting to contemporary needs. In the immediate vicinity, the old cemetery and the remains of the Priory of Saint-Ruf recall the central role of the church in local community and religious life.
The church environment, including the priory and cemetery, offers a tangible testimony of the medieval organization around places of worship. These elements, combined with the turbulent history of the building, make it an emblematic site of the Coast, reflecting the interactions between seigneurial power, religious orders and local people throughout the centuries.
