Origin and history
The road cross of Belflou is a religious monument dating from the 3rd quarter of the 17th century, located in the commune of Belflou, France. It consists of a cylindrical barrel decorated with an angel and a lamb, surmounted by a cross presenting a Christ on one side and a Virgin to the Child on the other. This type of cross, typical of rural roads, served both as a landmark and as a symbol of piety for travellers and locals.
Classified as historical monuments by decree of 1 October 1941, this cross is a testimony of religious art and popular devotion of the modern era. It is located in the Barthe Park, at approximately 42 La Barthe, in the municipality of Belflou, in the department of Aude. Its classification reflects its heritage importance and its remarkable state of conservation for a building of this period.
At the time of its construction, Languedoc (now integrated into Occitanie) was marked by a rural society organized around the Church and local lords. The road crosses played a central role in daily life: they rhythmized processions, served as points of prayer and marked parish boundaries or intersections.
