Origin and history

Villa Rivière, formerly known as Villa Desvignes, is an iconic house on Réunion Island, located at 34 rue du Commerce in Saint-Paul. Built in the late eighteenth century, it is a typical example of neoclassical Creole architecture, combining basalt stone and wood. Its barlong plan, varangue, pilasters and decorative details (rings with denticles, blackmailed guardrails, marble pavement) make it a rare testimony of the architectural authenticity of the time. The villa, with its outbuildings and courtyard, was listed at the Historic Monuments on 13 March 1990.

The villa River follows the classic cannons of Creole houses, with an outdoor kitchen and a preserved interior distribution. It has always belonged to private owners, but was first opened to the public in 2008. Its neoclassical style, local materials (endemic wood, basalt) and decorative elements (geometrical fronton, pyramidal pillars) illustrate the know-how of the artisans of the time.

The villa is now a monument accessible to visitors, offering an overview of domestic life and the art of building in Reunion in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Its listing in the Inventory of Historic Monuments highlights its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its history related to Saint Paul and the island.
