Borne dated 1492 known as La haute Borne (Case C 716): classification by order of 1 March 1966

Origin and history

The Haute Borne is a geographical terminal erected in 1492, as indicated by its engraving, marking the transition between the Middle Ages and the modern epoch. It is located in Saint-Étienne-lès-Remiremont, in the department of Vosges, in the heart of a forest environment, along the rue du Bois-des-Abbesses. Its location probably reflects a territorial delimitation or road signs of the time.

Ranked as a historic monument by decree of 1 March 1966, this pillar reflects the importance of geographical landmarks in forested and rural areas. It is now owned by the commune and remains a rare vestige of this pivotal period. Its state of conservation and its precise location, although noted as poor (level 5/10), are studied by local historians.

Available sources, such as Monumentum and Wikipedia, highlight its historical role and heritage protection. The boundary is mentioned in official inventories, notably in Les Monuments historiques de la France (1967), and is one of the listed monuments of the Vosges. Its approximate address, 20 Rue du Bois des Abbesses, corresponds to a wooded area between Saint-Étienne-lès-Remiremont and Saint-Amé.
