Origin and history

The Donjon d'Espirat, classified as a Historical Monument since 1963, is a 13th century defensive work located in the Puy-de-Dôme. It is a cylindrical tower whose entrance, located on the first floor, was accessible by a drawbridge or mobile gallery, according to military usages of the time. The base of the tower, raised by several meters, preserves traces of the systems of fastening beams (square holes under the full hanger door), as well as crowlets supporting the monolithic tympanum. This dungeon, now deconstructed and shaved on the second floor, presents remains of its primitive staircase and defensive openings as archers and murderers.

The castral enclosure of which it is part left significant wall elements, although the vaults of the lower floors were destroyed. A unique regional example of a stronghold dungeon with those of Montpeyroux and La Sauvetat, it illustrates medieval military architecture adapted to topographical constraints. Its present state, partially degraded, nevertheless allows us to study techniques of defensive construction of the thirteenth century, as the elevation of accesses to prevent direct assaults.

The location of the dungeon, near the church of Espirat (recorded address: Church Square or 7 Rue des Marronniers), reflects its central role in the spatial organization of the village. The defensive devices – raised entrance, narrow openings – underline its function both symbolic (seigneurial power) and practical (protection of the inhabitants). The inclusion in the title of the Historical Monuments in 1963 allowed to preserve these remains, despite their partial alteration over the centuries.
