Origin and history

The column of La Grande-Paroisse is a memorial erected in the 2nd quarter of the 18th century to mark the first encounter between Louis XV, king of France, and Marie Leczinska, daughter of the fallen king of Poland Stanislas Leszczynski. This event took place on 4 September 1725 in the territory of the commune, then situated on a strategic axis between Paris and the province. The royal marriage, arranged for diplomatic reasons, sealed an alliance between France and Poland, while strengthening the legitimacy of Louis XV after the Regency.

The column, made of red marble, was designed under the direction of architect Gabriel Boffrand, a renowned masterpiece of the time. It symbolizes the political and symbolic importance of this union, which marked the beginning of a nearly 60-year reign for Louis XV. Ranked a historical monument by decree of 15 February 1926, it remains a tangible testimony of the French monarchical history in the Seine-et-Marne department.

La Grande-Paroisse, a village located in Île-de-France on the banks of the Seine, was already a historic crossing, as evidenced by the Merovingian and Carolingian remains present on its territory. The monument is thus part of a rich local heritage, combining royal memory, classical architecture and riverscapes. Its designation as historic monuments underscores its heritage value, both for its aesthetics and for its role in collective memory.

Beyond its commemorative aspect, the column illustrates the artistic and political practices of the 18th century, where the building of monuments was used to display power and anchor events in public space.
