Origin and history
The house located at n°10 rue Georges-Sabo in Revel is a large house of the seventeenth century, built in pan-de-bois with brick filling. It is distinguished by its first floor in 80 cm corbellation and an attic with reduced bays. The façade, now covered with modern coating, conceals the original structure, but retains angle chains imitating bosses. The interior reveals a 17th century wooden staircase, a square baluster ramp, and ceilings with flower grey-painted caissons, dated 1696.
The interior distribution follows a symmetrical plane: a central corridor with stairwell separates two rooms per level, opening either on the street or on the garden. Three rooms retain a carved plaster decoration, typical of Languedoc at that time. These elements, along with the painted walls of rinceaux and pampres, suggest a construction in the second half of the seventeenth century. The house is part of the urban fabric of Revel, a bastide founded in 1342, near the central square.
The site is complemented by a small back house and a closed garden, bordered by the old sewer Mayral Creek. Although modern coatings mask architectural details, volumetrics and interior decorations make this a rare testimony of the affluent homes of this period. The protection in 2022 concerns only the main house, registered for its architecture and exceptional decorations.
The low-cost and widespread plaster decorations in Languedoc contrast with the scarcity of box ceilings painted in the civil building. The motifs of acanthe leaves and vines, as well as the red dots on the sticks, reflect a neat craftsmanship. This house illustrates the evolution of urban dwellings between the 15th and 17th centuries, from medieval pan-wood structures to more luxurious developments.
The rue Georges-Sabo, formerly rue des Frères, connected the Place de la Halle to the gate of the ramparts, now replaced by the boulevard Carnot. This urban context, combined with the analysis of buildings and decors, confirms the dating of the second half of the 17th century. The house is distinguished from the older houses of Revel by its size and the quality of its interior fittings.
