Origin and history

The Musée de l'Hôtel de Berny, located in Amiens, Hauts-de-France, is a former mansion built between 1633 and 1634 for the Treasurers of France of the generality of Picardie. In the Louis XIII style, it combines brick and stone, with a house and two typical pavilions from the early seventeenth century. The hotel was remodeled in the 19th century, especially during the Second Empire, where the Marquis de Landreville built communes by architect Louis Henry Antoine, while the Duthoit brothers decorated facades and interiors. In 1636 Cardinal de Richelieu stayed there during the siege of Corbie. After the Revolution, the hotel became a private property before being acquired in 1866 by Charles de Berny, then bequeathed to the city in 1957 by Gérard de Berny to make it a museum dedicated to art and picardic history.

Gérard de Berny, the last owner, enriches the hotel with various collections: Louis XV and XVI furniture, 17th century tapestries, 18th century woodwork (including those of the La Fayette salon), Art Nouveau ceramics and Art Deco, as well as works by Lagrenée, Isabey and Choderlos de Laclos. He also built the Zodiac Pavilion in 1934-35, adorned with woodwork by the Huet brothers and paintings by Pierre-Adrien Choquet. Piled during World War II, the hotel was restored by Gérard de Berny, who bequeathed it to Amiens. The museum opened in 1966, labeled Musée de France, before closing for work in 2006.

The gardens, designed by Gérard de Berny, combine four distinct styles: a Japanese garden, a French-style garden with a central basin, a romantic cloister lined with ivy, and a Moorish garden. These spaces house fountains, sculptures and monumental vases, reflecting the eclectic nature of the owner. The hotel, classified as a Historic Monument in 1993, also includes protected elements such as the fence walls, the cobbled court of honor, or orangery. Its architecture and collections bear witness to regional history, artistic influences from the 17th to 20th centuries, and the passion of a patron for Picardy heritage.
