16th century cross located in the cemetery: inscription by decree of 3 June 1927
Origin and history
The cross of Marigny-le-Cahouët is a historical monument located in the cemetery of this commune of Côte-d'Or, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Dating from the 16th century, it was listed as a Historical Monument by decree of 3 June 1927. This type of cross, typical of the Burgundy villages of the Renaissance, often served as a religious and social landmark for the inhabitants.
In the 16th century, Burgundy was a region marked by a transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, with a mainly agricultural economy and villages organized around the church and cemetery. The cemetery crosses, like that of Marigny-le-Cahouët, played a strong symbolic role, recalling the presence of the Church in daily life and serving as a gathering place for religious ceremonies. Their preservation bears witness to the importance attached to local religious heritage.
