Origin and history

The cross of Saint-Laurent-Rochefort is a sandstone cross of circular section, composed of several distinct elements. It is distinguished by its high relief decoration carved on the edge of the crusillon. The arms of the cross, shelled, have stewed ends adorned with leaves of cabbage mixed with a vegetal braid. The base of the crusillon, above the barrel, is a disc decorated with carved beads on the intrados. The drum, of truncated shape, rests on a base with prismatic mouldings and carries a sculpture in high relief on its lower third. The base supports a large overflowing tablet with a lower chamfer, while the cross rests on a low three-degree platform.

This cross, probably built in the 16th century, once served as a cemetery cross. It was registered as a Historical Monument by order of 7 January 1926. In 1990, it was restored by the Comte workshops. The location of this monument, although specified in the commune of Saint-Laurent-Rochefort (code Insee 42252), is considered to be of poor accuracy (level 5 of 10).

La Croix is located south of the church of Saint-Laurent-Rochefort, in the Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It belongs to the commune and is mentioned in the Mérimée base under the approximate address: 5010 Le Bourg, 42130 Saint-Laurent-Rochefort. No information is available about its access to the public or its current use (visits, services).
