Origin and history
The Bernardswiller well is a historic monument located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Bas-Rhin, in the Grand Est region. Built in the 16th century, it is distinguished by its typical architecture of this period and its location on 29 rue des Sœurs. This well, still visible today, is a vestige of local heritage and an example of the urban infrastructure of the modern era in Alsace.
Ranked a historic monument since 1934, Bernardswiller's well illustrates the importance of water points in the 16th century Alsatian villages. These collective works played a central role in daily life, providing drinking water, domestic chores and drinking livestock. Their presence also reflected a community organization, where access to water was often managed by strict rules to ensure equity.
The protection of the well by the Historic Monuments in 1934 underscores its heritage and architectural value. This official recognition allowed its preservation, despite subsequent urban transformations. Today, there remains a material testimony of Bernardswiller's history and its evolution throughout the centuries, while providing an overview of the construction techniques and practical needs of the inhabitants of the time.
